Pew: Political use of social media tilted liberal during campaigns

(The Hill) A new infographic compiled by the Pew Research Center on Thursday confirms the growing influence that social networks had over voters during Election 2012.

For now, Pew found, social media users tend to be more liberal than conservative, at 79 to 63 percent. But a growing number of Americans are using social medida tools to find information and participate in the political process through Facebook, Twitter and other online and mobile tools.

491 babies born alive after failed abortions, left to die: Statistics Canada confirms

(LifeSiteNews) Pro-life advocates are calling for a federal investigation after Canada’s official statistics agency has confirmed that 491 babies died after they were born alive during abortions between 2000 and 2009.

Statistics Canada confirmed the information in an e-mail to LifeSiteNews Tuesday. Pro-life blogger Patricia Maloney first discovered the data about the abortions in the federal agency’s online database.

Mary Ellen Douglas, National Organizer for Campaign Life Coalition, called the revelation “outrageous.”

“The federal government needs to do whatever it can to investigate this data,” she added. “It’s bad enough that babies are being killed in the womb, but now we learn that even those protected under Canadian law are apparently being left to die.”

Plan promotes protection for pedophiles

(WND) A California congresswoman wants to federalize a state law to prohibit counseling to change a person’s sexual orientation, including that of pedophiles.

Rep. Jackie Speier has introduced a resolution that calls on states to prohibit efforts to change a minor’s sexual orientation, even if the minor requests it, saying doing so is “dangerous and harmful.”

The resolution is modeled after California’s SB 1172, which passed earlier this year. The bill, which has several lawsuits pending against its implementation, has been labeled by both opponents and supporters as “banning ‘gay’ conversion therapy.”

However, the text of the legislation doesn’t specifically ban “gay” conversion therapy but, instead, prohibits attempts to change a person’s sexual orientation.

Obama faces huge challenge in setting up health insurance exchanges

(The Hill) The Obama administration faces major logistical and financial challenges in creating health insurance exchanges for states that have declined to set up their own systems.

The exchanges were designed as the centerpiece of President Obama’s signature law, and are intended to make buying health insurance comparable to booking a flight or finding a compatible partner on Match.com.

Sixteen states — most of them governed by Republicans — have said they will not set up their own systems, forcing the federal government to come up with one instead.

Christian Broadcaster Frank Pastore Remains in Coma; Wife Talks About Show, Night of Accident

(Christian Post) Popular Christian talk radio host Frank Pastore remains in a coma one week after a motorcycle crash, but showed signs of improvement on Monday while in stable but serious condition, his wife said. In talking about her husband`s inspirational impact on people even while he is in intensive care, Gina Pastore told The Christian Post that during his radio show on the same night of the accident he discussed the topic of death and the human soul.

Pastore, 55, who is the host of a daily show on radio station KKLA in Glendale, Calif., was injured in Duarte when his motorcycle was struck in the freeway carpool lane by a car driven by a Glendora woman, said California Highway Patrol officials, as reported by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. Same-sex marriage I: The constitutional standard

(SCOTUS Blog) This is the first article in a four-part series explaining the constitutional controversy, now awaiting the Supreme Court’s attention, over same-sex marriage.   At its private Conference on Friday, the Court is scheduled to consider ten separate petitions seeking review of lower court decisions on that issue.  Eight of the petitions deal with the constitutionality of a 1996 federal law, the Defense of Marriage Act, as it applies to gays and lesbians who are already legally married under state law.  One petition deals with a similar state law adopted in 2009 in Arizona for state employees.  And the tenth involves the constitutionality of California’s “Proposition 8,” a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage in that state.  Today’s first article in the series deals with the choice of a constitutional “standard of review” — that is, the test to be used to judge the validity of any of these laws.  Later articles in the series will deal with the legal arguments for and against same-sex marriage, and with the options the Justices have as they consider the ten petitions.

High court okay with `Christian Worldview` course

(OneNewsNow) Because the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear the case, high school students in a South Carolina public school district can continue taking off-campus religion courses for school credit.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation argues that the district is endorsing religion. But the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals already upheld a lower court decision in favor of the Spartanburg County School District`s program that gives students credit for taking a "Christian Worldview" class at a neighboring religious school (see earlier story).

Oran Smith of the Palmetto Family Council, an organization that aims to "persuasively present biblical principles in the centers of influence on issues affecting the family," says this is good news for Spartanburg High students.

Missouri appeals court blocks HHS mandate: first appeals court to do so

(LifeSiteNews) – A federal appeals court has granted a motion for a preliminary injunction blocking the HHS mandate against a Missouri business owner.

The order, issued by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, is the first decision from an appeals court in the litigation challenging the HHS mandate.

The order, which puts the HHS mandate on hold pending the outcome of the appeals process, prohibits the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) from requiring Frank R. O’Brien and O’Brien Industrial Holdings, LLC to comply with the mandate, which requires employers to purchase health insurance for their employees that includes coverage for contraceptives, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs.

O’Brien contends the mandate violates his constitutionally protected religious beliefs,

Francis Manion, Senior Counsel of the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), who is representing O’Brien, called the decision “a significant victory for our client.”

Students Drive Three Hours One Way to Protest Planned Parenthood

(LifeNews) The students at St. John’s Catholic School in remote Beloit, Kansas, are serious about putting their faith into action to stop Planned Parenthood. So serious that they have boarded buses at least four times to travel an average of more than three hours—one way—to pray at Planned Parenthood facilities. Afterward, they returned home—another 3-hour bus trip—the same day.

Theology teacher Andrew Niewald shared the story with STOPP in hopes that other Catholic schools will be inspired and will join in similar real-world activities to help students understand the primordial error of the abortion- and contraceptive-crazed culture, and to internalize the urgency and effectiveness of Christian witness from grassroots level young people engaging in the culture wars.

Hamas and Israel: Who Respects Palestinian Lives More?

(Christian Post) As the Bible teaches us, we should love all our "neighbors," including all people, everywhere, with special attention in thought and action to show love to the "neighbor" in need. In the present Gaza conflict, we should love all the Palestinian people and all the people of Israel at the same time. Tragically, the hate-filled policies of Hamas, the group that rules Gaza, are very destructive both to the people of Gaza (by using its own women and children as shields) and to the people of Israel (by viciously targeting its civilian population centers). In spite of some of the general media`s efforts to gauze-over the Gaza realities, in this on-going mortal conflict there is no moral equivalence between the two side`s policies. Nevertheless, at time of the writing of this essay there is peace, and we are grateful.

Action Alert: Parents of disabled children deserve the same rights as all parents!

From our friends at Family Research Council.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Monday that he plans to begin floor consideration of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on Tuesday.

The United Nations` Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) would pose serious problems for the United States if it were ratified today. Though it is touted as the progeny and logical follow-up to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1991, it is in fact more of a power grab than humanitarian action.

U.S. sovereignty is at issue on a number of fronts, including that the CRPD presumes the establishment of rights contained in treaties that the United States has not ratified, including the International Covenant on Social, Economic, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). These rights are not recognized by the United States Constitution, nor are provided by existing U.S. laws - however U.S. courts could use the ratification of the CRPD to force Americans to comply with other UN treaties which are against American interests.

The original ADA equally protects the rights of all parents to direct the upbringing, education, and care of their children, regardless of the disability status of parent or child. The CRPD would take away this right, obligating our government to ensure that "in all actions concerning children with disabilities, the best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration." The phrase "best interests of the child" is an international law "term of art," its meaning firmly established through consistent application by other bodies, including the Committee on the Rights of the Child. As one international legal scholar explains, "Best interests provides decision and policy makers with the authority to substitute their own decisions for either the child`s or the parents` provided it is based on consideration of the best interests of the child." In ratifying the CRPD, the government would apply this standard only to parents of disabled children - a position antithetical to the protection for parents provided by the ADA.

I urge you to contact your senators today, and let them know that parents of disabled children deserve the same rights as all parents.

Legalize it! The stark generational divide on pot, gay marriage and illegal immigration

(Washington Post) Strong majorities of adults under age 30 support gay marriage and a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, and a majority supports legalizing small amounts of marijuana according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The fact that younger Americans are consistently more supportive of these measures  than the oldest generation may signal change in the years to come. For those under age 30, about two thirds support gay marriage and a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. Support is shallower for legalizing marijuana but a majority of young people still support it. Middle age Americans (age 40 to 64) split more narrowly on each question while seniors (age 65 plus) generally oppose gay marriage and marijuana and split on a “path to citizenship.”

10 Commandments monument in place at Okla. Capitol

(SF Gate) A 6-foot tall granite monument inscribed with the Ten Commandments was installed Thursday on the state Capitol grounds, drawing a harsh reaction from opponents and a legal scholar who question whether the display is constitutional.
The Republican-controlled Legislature authorized the privately funded monument in 2009, and former Democratic Gov. Brad Henry signed the bill into law.

The bill`s author, Rep. Mike Ritze, and his family paid about $10,000 for the monument`s construction.

"I think it`s a beautiful work of art, and it`s identical to ones in Texas, Utah and 200 other monuments that have been in place for years," said Ritze, R-Broken Arrow.

A private contractor put the monument in place Thursday morning on the north side of the Capitol building, near an entrance that has been closed for years.

Three years ago, the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled a similar Ten Commandments monument erected on the Haskell County Courthouse lawn in Stigler was unconstitutional, but the U.S. Supreme Court has authorized a similar monument at the Texas Capitol.

New Poverty Figures Raise Questions on Role of Church, Christians

(Christian Post) In the final months of the presidential election, both major candidates mentioned the term "middle class" countless times in any effort to mobilize the country`s largest voting bloc. What they rarely, if ever, mentioned were those who live below the poverty line and what role the government and the Church should play in helping these 46.2 million Americans.

When broken down to numbers that are easier to grasp, roughly 1-in-7, or 15 percent of Americans, are poor, up slightly from the previous year`s total of 43.6 million.

But what constitutes as a poor family in America? The U.S. Census Bureau defines poverty as a hypothetical family of two adults and two children living on an income of $23,021 or less in 2011. The median household income in the U.S. in 2011 was $50,054.

Yet the more poignant question is what is the primary cause of poverty and what role should the Church and the government play in reducing this number?

Christian publisher wins nation’s third injunction against HHS mandate

(LifeSiteNews)  An Illinois-based Christian publisher has become the third company to win a reprieve from the controversial HHS mandate that requires employers to cover contraceptives, sterilizations, and abortion-inducing drugs.

On Friday, Tyndale House Publishers won a preliminary injunction against the Obamacare mandate in DC’s federal court as they pursue their lawsuit against the administration. Friday’s hearing was the first in the suit, which was filed Oct. 2.

The company says its insurance plan already covers some contraceptives for its 260 employees, but that it objects to covering abortifacients like Plan B and Ella, which act in part by preventing newly-conceived embryos from implanting in the mother’s womb.

“The contraceptive coverage mandate affirmatively compels the plaintiffs to violate their religious beliefs in order to comply with the law and avoid the sanctions that would be imposed for their noncompliance,” wrote U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton.

Gay marriages cases re-set for November 30

(Supreme Court of the United States blog) The Supreme Court will consider all ten of the same-sex marriage petitions at its private Conference on November 30, instead of at the next session on November 20, according to the Court’s electronic docket.   Eight of the filings deal with the constitutionality of the 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act, limiting marriage for all federal purposes to a union of a man and a woman.  One petition deals with the validity of an Arizona law, similar to DOMA, that limits benefits for married state employees.  And the tenth is an attempt to revive California’s “Proposition 8,” imposing a statewide ban on marriage for gays and lesbians.   All of the laws at issue had been struck down in lower courts.

The Court has given no reason for re-scheduling these petitions, but one possible explanation is that the choice of which to review and what issues to consider is a complex one that may require added time for consideration.

Abortion views differ radically -- even among liberals

(OneNewsNow) In direct contrast to common assumptions, not all evangelicals and conservatives believe abortion should be outlawed in every situation, and many liberals do not want abortion available in all circumstances. Ron Sellers of Grey Matter Research conducted a survey that found evidence of this.

"Only 28 percent of all Americans believe that abortion should be legal in every situation," he indicates. "Only 18 percent believe abortion should be illegal in every situation. Thirty-eight percent said there are some cases where it should be legal; others said it should not. And then 16 percent frankly said, I honestly haven`t decided how I feel on this issue. I just don`t know." So Sellers says the survey stresses that people may lean in a particular direction but are not totally one-sided.

Same-sex ‘marriage’ ten years on: lessons from Canada

(LifeSiteNews) Would recognizing same-sex relationships as marriages be much of a game-changer? What impact, if any, would it have on the public conception of marriage or the state of a nation’s marriage culture?

There has been no shortage of speculation on these questions. But the limited American experience with same-sex marriage to date gives us few concrete answers. So it makes sense to consider the Canadian experience since the first Canadian court established same-sex marriage a decade ago. There are, of course, important cultural and institutional differences between the US and Canada and, as is the case in any polity, much depends upon the actions of local political and cultural actors. That is to say, it is not necessarily safe to assume that Canadian experiences will be replicated here. But they should be considered; the Canadian experience is the best available evidence of the short-term impact of same-sex marriage in a democratic society very much like America.

"Christians everywhere are called to urgent prayer for these oppressed people who are crying out to God for hope," said Yohannan. "Only Jesus Christ can offer the ultimate hope and freedom these abused people seek."

Academics and Intelligentsia Still Love Eugenics Politics

(LifeNews) The worst policies and values in society often come from those who think they are the smartest among us, e.g., the professorate and those in the intelligentsia.

Even when they don’t originate very bad new ideas, all too often, they become deeply enamored of them. Take fascism and communism. The former was widely embraced by the university set in the 20s and 30s, and despite the tens of millions of dead and the model’s utter economic failure, the latter retains a powerful hold among the tenured at some of our most prestigious centers of higher learning.

Eugenics was of a kind. It came entirely out of the gray-mattered class, and was pushed most vigorously by our intellectual, cultural, and political elites, resulting in more than 60,000 involuntary sterilizations in the USA–all with the imprimatur in 1927 of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling (Buck v Bell), penned by the mighty Oliver Wendell Holmes.

It’s his birthday, because she chose life

(LifeSiteNews) Two years ago today, we spent the day in a hospital with the family that had chosen us to raise their son. We had sat through ultrasounds together, laughed over Chinese food and had met at the hospital late one night the previous week for a false alarm. This was the day, though, we all knew it. It was an emotional day, moving from laughing together to sitting quietly in the tension of the moment.

(The Hill) President Obama’s reelection was less than a day old before the speculation began about who might run to replace him in 2016.

Atop the list for the Democrats: Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and a gaggle of ambitious younger party stars, from Maryland Gov. Martin O’ Malley to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Among Republicans, talk has already turned to Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.), New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Rep. Paul Ryan (Wis.).
As was the case in advance of the 2008 election, the field in both parties seems wide open.

How Can I Oppose Same-Sex Marriage When Someone I Love Is Gay?

(Christian Post) Voters in 32 out of the 32 states where it has appeared on the ballot have upheld marriage as the union of a woman and a man. Advocates of same-sex marriage are holding out hope that their long losing streak will end on Election Day in Minnesota, Washington, Maryland or Maine.

Increasingly, advocates of same-sex marriage are abandoning legalistic arguments about "equality" and "civil rights," and appealing to emotion and personal relationships instead. "We (gays and lesbians) are your neighbors, your friends, your co-workers, your classmates and your relatives," the argument goes. "If you respect and care about us, how can you deny us what we want?" (namely, to have their same-sex relationships affirmed by the state through marriage licenses).

Polls suggest this approach is having an effect. People who know someone who self-identifies as "gay" or "lesbian" are more likely to support the redefinition of marriage than people who do not.

Wash. college OK’s exposure of young girls to naked man

(ADF) Alliance Defending Freedom sent a letter to Washington’s Evergreen State College Thursday after college officials claimed that its non-discrimination policy doesn’t allow the school to stop a man from exposing himself to girls as young as six years old in a women’s locker room. A local district attorney has also stated that he doesn’t plan to enforce the state’s indecent exposure statute to protect the girls.

The 45-year-old male student, who dresses as a woman and goes by the name Colleen Francis, undressed and exposed his male genitalia on several occasions in the presence of young girls who use the college’s locker rooms. Students from Olympia High School and children in the Evergreen Swim Club and Aquatics Academy share use of the locker rooms with the college. Rather than prevent the man from using the locker room, the school has installed curtains and asked the girls to change behind them.

“Little girls should not be exposed to naked men, period. A college’s notions about ‘non-discrimination’ don’t change that,” said Senior Legal Counsel David Hacker.

First, she fled from the clutches of the brutal communist regime of East Germany. More recently, she went into exile from the now-united Germany to avoid the ruthless persecution of homeschooling families, which can include massive fines, jail time, and even loss of custody over children.

Ireland Poised to Surrender Parental Rights

(Christian Newswire) Irish voters will take up a referendum this Saturday to decide whether or not to surrender their parental rights to the government. The referendum would insert a "child rights" amendment into the Irish constitution and open families up to forced adoptions and the use of the "best interests of the child" standard in "all proceedings."

By eliminating the current presumption that parents act in the best interest of the child, the amendment would empower the government through its social welfare agencies to summon families to answer to secret courts if it were "likely" that a child`s safety or welfare "could" be compromised.

Why Vote?

"Politics are a part of a religion in such a country as this, and Christians must do their duty to their country as a part of their duty to God. God will bless or curse this nation according to the course Christians take in politics." - Charles Finney, 19th century American revivalist and evangelist

As an American and native Californian, I grew up being taught to honor the flag and to defend my country. My father grew up on a large farm on the plains of South Dakota and later became a U.S. Marine. My mother was an orphaned, Hawaiian born Portuguese from Oahu who witnessed her territory become the 50th state in the Union. That mixture bred within me a deep love and respect for America. It was instilled within me that, when I turned eighteen, one of the ways I would do my part to protect and preserve my country was by voting.

It was President Abraham Lincoln who said, "The ballot is stronger than the bullet." I believe that and the world believes this too. Many nations and peoples desire to achieve what we have made our custom. Rather than violent overthrows and bloody coups, Americans step into a small unassuming booth, draw a curtain and by casting their vote, fire a shot that can still be heard around the world. For over two hundred and thirty years, Americans have been engaged in the longest running and most peaceful revolution called the American vote.

My freedoms are the most important things I possess and am willing to fight for. Freedom is so dear to me that I want to insure that my children and grandchildren have the very same freedoms our Founding Fathers and generations before secured for me. Voting is how our nation remains secure. But what concerns me today are not the political pundits, ranting liberals or the media conflagration that saturates our websites and television. What deeply concerns me is the lack of knowledge, understanding and apathy that describes the Christian today. This disengagement among Christians from their culture is eerily similar to the time of Hitler`s advance. The church at that time, for the most part, was silent and too polite to stand against tyrannical tendencies. By doing so, they sacrificed their convictions on the altar of tolerance and manners. The German church, along with the churches of Europe, kept up their attendance, sang their worship songs and read their Bibles, yet failed terribly to stop one man`s satanic march of Nazism. Keep in mind that while the churches were large and well attended, approximately eleven million people (mostly Jews, many Christians and tens of thousands of homosexuals) were carted off to death camps in the name of political correctness. The church had become miserably irrelevant by not shining its light nor sounding the trumpet. Could this same historical apathy be strangling the heart of the church today?

Our nation was founded upon a Judeo-Christian worldview derived from the Bible. For those who are Christians, the Bible is to be our guide in this upcoming election. Today, many Christians are saying that they cannot vote for Barak Obama because of his polytheistic leanings, lack of leadership and the fact that the nation has changed for the worse. Other Christians will say they cannot vote for Mitt Romney because he is a Mormon. But wait a minute. Since when did God call us to only vote for a Christian? Was Nebuchadnezzar Jewish when he helped the Jews in Babylon? No. Was Cyrus Jewish when he helped the Jews in Persia? No. Jesus Christ is LORD, and He alone is King of Kings. Have we forgotten that we are to do and act righteously? Voting is the right thing to do! Our vote reveals our belief system, but sitting out this election will reveal something more - disobedience. "Whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, to him it is sin" (James 4:17).

Let me first say that I am a monarchist - I believe in a ruling and reigning King and I am awaiting His return any day now. But until He comes, I am to pray and vote for righteousness. Thus, I will ask you, fellow Christians, to apply the following litmus test to the two candidates in this election as I am. I like to call it the "Trinity of Truth" test:

  • First, God says that He is the Creator and Inventor of natural marriage between a man and a woman. Thus, as a Christian, I must vote for the candidate that has a voting record that is the closest to the biblical worldview of defending traditional marriage if I am going to be in agreement with God.
  • Second, God says that He is the Creator and Defender of life. He holds every one of us responsible for protecting defenseless pre-born children. Thus, as a Christian, I must vote for the candidate that has a voting record that is the closest to the biblical worldview of Pro-Life if I am going to be in agreement with God.
  • Third, God says that He is the Creator and Sustainer of the Jews, Jerusalem and Israel`s right to their land. Thus, as a Christian, I must vote for the candidate that has a voting record that is the closest to the biblical worldview of supporting Israel if I am going to be in agreement with God.

There you have it. Because I am a Christian and I understand my Bible, I will be voting for Mitt Romney in this election rather than Barak Obama. This is because Romney`s voting record, along with the Republican platform, comes closest to the biblical worldview of the Bible.

Electoral College 101: How to Win the Presidency Without Winning the Popular Vote

(Christian Post) In the 2000 election, George W. Bush won even though Al Gore had the most votes. And, as The Christian Post and some other media outlets recently reported, current polls suggest that President Barack Obama may win re-election while Mitt Romney may win the most votes. How can that happen?

To win the presidency, a candidate must win a majority of the votes in the Electoral College. The Electoral College has electors equal to the number of members in Congress (535 representatives in the House and 100 senators) plus three electors for the District of Columbia (which were granted in 1961 by Amendment XXIII to the U.S. Constitution).

With the exception of Maine and Nebraska, states award all their electors to the candidate that wins a majority of the popular vote in that state.

A candidate, therefore, can win the election without winning the popular vote if they barely win the popular vote in the states they carry and lose by large margins in the states they do not carry.

To illustrate, let us assume...

Ohio Voting Count `Nightmare` Looms

(NewsMax) With the presidential election expected to hinge on Ohio, the state’s former secretary of state, GOP stalwart Kenneth Blackwell, is warning that a little-known change in the Buckeye State’s absentee-ballot process could lead to a “nightmare scenario.”

And that scenario could force the entire country to wait 10 days after the election to find out who will be the next president of the United States. It’s a complicated situation, to say the least, but one that could have a far-reaching impact on the Nov. 6 election process.

For the first time in the key swing state’s history, Blackwell says, virtually all Ohio voters this year were mailed an application for an absentee ballot. In previous elections, most Ohio voters had to request an application for an absentee ballot to receive one.

The concern is that thousands of Ohio voters may complete the absentee-ballot application and receive an absentee ballot, but not bother to complete and mail in the ballot.

Anyone who is sent an absentee ballot — including those who do not complete it and mail it in — and later shows up at the polls on Election Day to cast their ballot in person will be instructed to instead complete a provisional ballot.

And under Ohio election law, provisional ballots cannot be opened until 10 days after an election.

The organization, headquartered in London, has posted online a document titled “Exclaim! Young People’s Guide to ‘Sexual Rights: An IPPF declaration,” which proclaims that “sexual rights” for youth must be guaranteed, so that “all young people around the world [will] be able to explore, experience and express their sexualities in healthy, positive, pleasurable and safe ways.”

Just as controversial, it also advances as a fundamental goal the “removal of parental involvement or spousal consent laws that prevent young people from seeking sexual and reproductive health services.”
