A Demonic View of `Dignity`

daily_commentary_07_21_15

(Breakpoint) A few weeks ago, I told you on BreakPoint that the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage, had placed our culture on a well-greased slope. All that was lacking, I said, was for someone to give it a push.

Well, the pushing has begun in earnest.

The West, the Family, and the Big Picture

(Breakpoint) The world is leaving us and our values behind. If we don`t get with the times, we may soon find ourselves isolated and irrelevant. If you think I`m talking about Christians and the recent Supreme Court decision on same-sex “marriage,” think again.

Painkillers. . . Heroin. . . Epidemic

(Breakpoint) For most people, heroin is something foreign, something that impacts “other people” in those neighborhoods, so the suffering and tragedy caused by the drug is someone else’s problem.

The Ol` Bait and Switch

daily_commentary_07_06_15

(Breakpoint) Both before and after the Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, some Christians argued that allowing same-sex couples to marry is not inconsistent with traditional Christian teaching on marriage.

At the heart of these arguments is the assertion that same-sex relationships are, to borrow a phrase from gay writer Andrew Sullivan, “virtually normal.” That is, same-sex relationships are, with one very obvious exception, not all that different from traditional marriages. Thus, just as the Supreme Court held that similarly-situated couples should be treated equally under law, similarly-situated couples should be treated equally in our churches.

The problem is that same-sex couples and opposite-sex couples are not nearly as alike as those making these arguments would have us believe.

Bakers Take Path of Yeast Resistance

(FRC) What part of "cease and desist" don`t conservatives understand? Apparently, a lot -- or so the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industry would like us to believe. After four days of negative PR, officials are in full-blown damage control over Commissioner Brad Avakian`s $135,000 ruling against Aaron and Melissa Klein, which included a decree that the Christian bakers no longer speak publicly about the decision.

Christians Are the New Dred Scott

(The Stand) The problem of the shrinkage of religious liberty was bad enough before the Supreme Court meddled in it, and now religious liberty is on pace to vanish any place outside the four walls of a church building or a home. And it may not even be safe there.

Love, Rights, and Marriage

(Breakpoint) Today, we’ll talk about a more difficult assignment: Talking to teens and young adults about same-sex marriage.

It’s more difficult because young adults today are much more likely than us older folks to support same-sex marriage, or to be confused by it. But "more difficult" is not the same as impossible—that’s because, no matter what the media is telling you, young evangelicals are still much less likely to support same-sex marriage than their non-evangelical peers.

Engage California 2015 Conference

(Faith and Public Policy) Our worldview is being challenged and Christians must respond. The Engage California 2015 Conference will call all Christians to engage the culture for Christ.

The conference will be held at Calvary Chapel Chino Hills on July 17th and 18th. Admission is free but you must register.

The conference speakers will uncover and expose the battle between the secular anti-God influence on our culture and God’s holy standards. Although many Christians know there is a dichotomy between these views, they separate their knowledge of the Biblical view of cultural issues from their application of cultural views to everyday life.

A paradigm shift is absolutely essential. Christians must begin to exert influence over the culture. Because scripture tells us to show our faith through our works, we will examine ways for Christians to integrate their Biblical values with their cultural values. Lastly, we will encourage attendees to learn how they, and their church, can take action in a way that shows God’s truth, humility, and love.

All aspects of the daily life of each confessing Christian should be filled with accomplishing God’s will both in the life of the individual as well as in the life of our nation. God’s instructions for life found in scripture benefit each and every human being, Christian and non-Christian alike. Because of this, the conference speakers will provide training regarding what we can do as individuals or organized groups to make an impact on our culture and shape the future of our nation.

(Breakpoint) As many expected, the Supreme Court, by a 5-4 vote, ruled that under the Constitution, “same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry.” Brushing aside arguments about history and the purpose of marriage, Justice Kennedy, writing for the majority, wrote “No longer may this liberty be denied to them.”

Tolerance: It`s Not Just for Liberals Anymore!

(FRC) If there`s one thing the Supreme Court accomplished last Friday (besides unleashing cultural chaos on America), it was ending the liberal media`s charade. Whatever scrap of journalistic impartiality existed flew out the courtroom window Friday when the press decided these five justices not only invented a right to same-sex marriage but to censorship too.

State Silences Bakers Who Refused to Make Cake for Lesbian Couple, Fines Them $135K

(Daily Signal) In the ruling, Avakian placed an effective gag order on the Kleins, ordering them to “cease and desist” from speaking publicly about not wanting to bake cakes for same-sex weddings based on their Christian beliefs.

“This effectively strips us of all our First Amendment rights,” the Kleins, owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, which has since closed, wrote on their Facebook page. “According to the state of Oregon we neither have freedom of religion or freedom of speech.”

Everything Has Changed and Nothing Has Changed — The Supreme Court Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

(Albert Mohler) The majority’s argument, expressed by Justice Kennedy, is that the right of same-sex couples to marry is based in individual autonomy as related to sexuality, in marriage as a fundamental right, in marriage as a privileged context for raising children, and in upholding marriage as central to civilization. But at every one of these points, the majority had to reinvent marriage in order to make its case. The Court has not merely ordered that same-sex couples be allowed to marry – it has fundamentally redefined marriage itself.

Bugs in the Overpopulation Theory

(Breakpoint) In a 1971 appearance on the Dick Cavett Show, John Lennon and wife Yoko Ono gave their take on the big scare of the day: overpopulation.

“I don`t really believe it,” Lennon said in his Beatle-esque Liverpool accent. “I think whatever happens will balance itself out...It`s alright for us all living to say, `Well, there`s enough of us [people] so we won`t have any more...I don`t believe in that.”

Black Christians Must Continue to Forgive White Racists

(The Stand) This week Stacey Patton, author and a senior enterprise reporter for the Chronicle of Higher Education, essentially told the families of the nine black Christians murdered inside Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC that their grief isn’t black enough.  Her Washington Post piece, “Black America should stop forgiving white racists,” may be one of the most offensive and disrespectful responses I’ve read.
