New Attack on Religious Liberties in California

(Capitol Resource Institute) The California State Senate introduced SB 323 today that would remove the tax-exempt status of non-profit youth organizations deemed to discriminate on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation.

Gender identity refers to a person`s private sense of his or her own gender. For example, if a female considers herself a male and is most comfortable referring to her personal gender in masculine terms, then her gender identity is male.  In order to maintain non-profit status, California non-profit youth organizations will be forced to allow boys who identify themselves as female into restrooms and dorms, on overnight camps, retreats, and onto female sports teams.

SB 323 states that youths groups including Boy Scouts, Young Men`s Christian Association (YMCA), Girl Scouts, and Young Women`s Christian Association (YMCA) that discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity would lose their tax exempt status. The bill also includes nonprofit private schools, kindergarten through college.

"This bill is a direct attack on the First Amendment, Religious Liberties and Freedom of Association," stated Karen England of Capitol Resource Institute. "Non-profit organizations that were legally formed under the laws of the State of California, and have been operating for the good of our youth, will be forced to abandon their deeply held religious viewsor close their doors."

"The homosexual activist group who sponsored the bill, Equality California, just can`t seem to allow people to have traditional values or hold religious beliefs," said England. "They will continue bullying and attempting to force their views on every Californian. Capitol Resource Institute will vigorously oppose this legislation. Citizens should be outraged over this bill and contact their state senators immediately."

Researchers Map Fetal Brain Signals For First Time Ever

(Life News)  Researchers at Wayne State University in Michigan are mapping, for the first time ever, fetal brain signals.

Science has proven that unborn babies show brainwaves starting at just several weeks into pregnancy and the scientists say the mapping project could lead to methods of helping prevent and treat brain disorders such as autism or dyslexia.

State Dept. Still Downplaying Religious Element in Terrorist Threat Advisory

(CNS News)  A State Department “worldwide caution” updating U.S. citizens about potential terror threats has little to say about the fact that most of the terrorist groups targeting Americans profess themselves to be inspired by Islam.

The 2,000-plus word memo released this week does not use the word “Muslim” at all. “Islam” is used only where it appears in the actual name of a militant group (such as the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan), and in reference to “anti-Islamic videos and cartoons,” which the department says were linked to some anti-Western violence last September.

Smart phones and “Truth Booths” combine to show the humanity of unborn children

(Life Site News)  A colleague at National Right to Life recently emailed me a photo of an ad that appeared in her local newspaper. It was titled, “Reflections: the Ultimate Prenatal Experience” and was about 3d and 4D ultrasounds.

This was separate from, but instantly reminded me of, what are known as “Truth Booth” about which we have written twice in NRL News Today. (See “Mall Kiosks Ideal for Continual Pro-life Education,”  and “Smart Phones Provide Mobile Tool to Help Women Choose Life.“)

FRC shooter wanted to ‘kill as many as possible’

(OneNewsNow) Floyd Lee Corkins pleaded guilty Wednesday in a court hearing to multiple criminal charges (including committing an act of terrorism) stemming from the August 15, 2012, shooting inside the facilities of the Family Research Council. It came to light during the hearing that during an interview with the FBI right after the shooting that he admitted his guilt. He said he intended to "kill as many as possible and smear the Chick-fil-A sandwiches in victims` faces, and kill the guard."

Upon review of Corkins` family computer, authorities found that he had identified his targets on the SPLC website, which previously had labeled several pro-family, Christian groups -- FRC among them -- as "hate groups." In his plea agreement on Wednesday, Corkins acknowledged he identified FRC as "an anti-gay organization" by visiting Southern Poverty`s website.

Tragic consequences in Canadian scouting

(OneNewsNow) In November 1998, under the mantra of wanting to be more "inclusive," the board of governors overseeing scouting in Canada decided to admit females, atheists, agnostics, homosexuals, bisexuals, and transsexuals into scouting. And in 1999,Scouts Canada approved the establishment of an all-homosexual troop. As a result, scouting membership rolls in Canada -- within five years -- dwindled to less than half what they had been (from 300,000 to 130,000).Brian Rushfeldt, president of Canada Family Action, says Canada opted for political correctness despite definitive evidence of the negative consequences.

Connecticut Bill Threatens Homeschool Freedom

(HSLDA) Proposed Bill 374 filed in the Connecticut General Assembly would require all homeschooled children ages 12, 14, and 17 to undergo a behavioral health assessment. These assessments would be conducted by an unspecified health care provider and would be conducted even though there was no indication whatsoever that these children had a behavioral problem. The bill states that the results of the assessments are to be disclosed only to the child’s parent or guardian, but that the health care provider must submit a form to the State Board of Education verifying that the child has received the assessment.

Open Doors USA Launches New 5-5-5 Challenge

(Christian Newswire) Open Doors USA has launched a campaign to pray and support persecuted Christians called the "5-5-5 Challenge."

Each year Open Doors releases the World Watch List, a ranking of the top 50 countries which are the worst persecutors of Christians. North Korea has held the No. 1 spot for 11 years in a row. Other countries following North Korea on the 2013 list are Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Maldives, Mali, Iran, Yemen and Eritrea.

The 5-5-5 Challenge is a three part campaign. The first part is a challenge to set aside five minutes (or more) a week to pray for the country of the week on the World Watch List website. While some of the countries on the list are frequently in the news, such as North Korea and Syria, there are some that are rarely noticed. Those include such countries as Maldives and Eritrea. This portion of the challenge was created so Christians in every country on the World Watch List are covered with prayer.

Florida judge OKs 3-parent family: two lesbians and a homosexual man

Canadian schoolchildren are being rigorously recruited for homosexual activism

(LifeSiteNews) Because of the pro-gay slant of many anti-bullying policies, critics say that anti-bullying apps will result in children being mobilized into homosexual activism.

Kari Simpson, president of Culture Guard, told LifeSiteNews.com in a recent interview that mobile app strategies effectively mobilize children to do the “dirty work of spying on and reporting those who dissent from the sex activist political agenda.”

“Parents should be aware of the political propaganda behind this initiative. It has nothing to do with protecting children, even though it is being implemented under the guise of ‘anti-bullying.’ On the contrary, it is a very strategic and dangerous agenda that seeks to deconstruct the traditional family unit,” she said.

New Invention Could Help Reduce Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

(Life News)  Sudden infant death syndrome, also known as crib death, is responsible for the deaths of 7000 infants a year. Now a new invention has been made that might drastically reduce this number.

Researchers at The Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM in Berlin have developed a circuit board made of polyurethane which can be put inside baby’s clothes and monitor the breathing of the infant.  If the child stops breathing, the device alerts parents, who can then render first aid and save the baby before it is too late.

This intervention can be vital, because a child can only go 4 to 5 min. without oxygen before brain damage and then death occurs.  The new invention gives those few critical minutes that would make the difference between life or death for the child.

Obama Admin Has Lost 10 of 14 HHS Abortion Mandate Decisions

(Life News)  Leave it to the federal government to issue an 80-page document that could have been summed up in two words: nothing’s changed. Yesterday, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) had tipped off news outlets that it was set to offer an olive branch to religious groups on its abortion, contraception, and sterilization mandate.

The compromise, HHS promised, would alleviate the concerns of organizations like Catholic Charities, hospitals, or colleges who are forced to provide life-destroying drugs against their will–or pay the price.

Turns out, the “new” HHS guidelines are virtually identical to the old ones, with a very slight change in how the accounting is done for pills or procedures that faith-based groups object to.

Roe’s Multiplier Effect: Generations Dead From Abortion

(Life News)  This year’s marking of the 40th anniversary Roe v. Wade included, naturally, much regret over the growing death toll caused by the scourge of abortion. The number is now over 55 million. That’s 55 million abortions of children who never became Americans.

That number, however, doesn’t begin to do justice to the total loss. 40 years of Roe v. Wade now equates to the loss of multiple generations of Americans, thus producing an even worse multiplier effect, one that must be considered in counting up the casualties. Think about it:

A huge number of those 55 million would have gone on to have their own children. Those aborted in 1973, would be 40 years old this year. Some of them would even have grandchildren.

EWTN Will Continue its Lawsuit Against HHS Abortion Mandate

(Life News)  The Catholic television station EWTN is not happy with the revisions proposed to the HHS mandate, saying they do not offer the legal protection it needs to not be forced to comply.

The station sent LifeNews the following statement:

“This morning the US Department of Health and Human Services issued a notice of proposed rulemaking on the government mandate that employee health plans must provide contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs as part of their coverage. On February 9, 2012, EWTN was the first organization to file a lawsuit challenging this mandate shortly after the original rules were promulgated by the government. That lawsuit is still pending in the US District Court in Birmingham, Alabama.

Funeral Procession Held for Aborted Babies in South Africa

(Life News)  On 1 February 1997 abortion-on-demand was legalised in South Africa. By 1 February 2013 an estimated 1 100 000 South African babies have lost their lives through abortion – legally – with tax payers money.

Today, a funeral procession was organised by the Christian Action Network in memory of the thousands of babies, killed by abortion, who have never had a funeral. This is the 16th year that the Christian Action Network has organised a National Day of Repentance.

Marchers carried miniature coffins, Christian flags and crosses and were led by a hearse. A six metre billboard trailer, with the words, “Abortion Kills Babies”, and “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves” (Proverbs 31:8) accompanied the marchers.

Action Alert: Call the Boy Scouts of America Board of Directors and tell them to uphold Scouting values.

(Family Research Council) If you`ve tried to get through to the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), you know it`s been tough. If you`ve wanted to express your concern about the BSA abandoning their longstanding policy of safeguarding Scouts by restricting openly homosexual Scout leaders from holding leadership positions, you may have been greeted by an endlessly ringing phone. This may be one instance in which the Boy Scouts were not prepared.

The BSA national leadership were not prepared for the thousands of Americans who were shocked to hear that an organization that could always be counted on for standing for what`s right was about to cave-in to homosexual activists and corporations which have been threatening the organization`s funding.

For generations, the BSA has shaped our nation`s moral character by teaching young men to do their duty to God and country. This is why, when the BSA board begins its annual meeting on Monday of next week, it is so important that you keep the pressure on, to show them how devastating this moral collapse will be for the Scouts and the country.

Please call the members of the BSA Board of Directors (sample call script below) and kindly urge them to stand strong and true to their timeless values:

  • David M. Weekley: (713) 659-8111
  • Togo D. West, Jr.: (202) 775-1775

Sample Phone Script:

Hello, my name is _________, from __________.

Thank you for your service as a board member of the Boy Scouts of America.

As you`re aware, a new proposal indicates that the Boy Scouts of America may revoke their longstanding policy of safeguarding Scouts by restricting homosexuals from holding leadership positions over boys. For decades, your national organization has kept the interest of the boys it serves as the focus of all its actions. No matter what, the Boy Scouts of America could be counted upon to do the right thing and not yield to any social pressure, and has thus far stood strong.

Please do not jeopardize the safety and moral integrity of Scouting in the interest of social activism. The proposal to relegate the decision on homosexual leaders to local chartered organizations sends the wrong signal from the national body: that political correctness ultimately triumphs over character.

Please retain the current long-held and time-tested policy regarding homosexual leadership and membership. America stands with you. Lead the way. Please stand strong.

Thank you, and God bless you.

Together, we can make a difference in turning the tide and keeping an honorable organization on an honorable path.
