Taking the Law Into Their Own Hands!

We are about to do something historic in California.   We pass bad laws all the time.  But it is rare for ordinary citizens to push back and overturn a bad law.

This law is different.  It is personal.

We do not want our sons and daughters to be forced to share bathrooms, showers and locker rooms at our public schools.

The Governor had the chance to veto it, and he failed.  Now it is our turn to use "the people`s veto".

Of course not all of the signed petitions are in our offices yet; there are still four more weeks in this campaign.  So why are we optimistic about qualifying this referendum next month?  At Privacy For All Students, we see what is happening.

Ordinary citizens are going to www.PrivacyForAllStudents.com and downloading petitions. They are telling friends, family and co-workers about this bad law AND the referendum to overturn it.

Perhaps the most amazing thing to watch is what is happening in the faith community.  Churches are standing up and owning the referendum.  They are collecting signatures on Sunday after Sunday. Religious leaders are saying that it is their responsibility to show compassion to all students and to not let the privacy and safety of some be pushed aside for the demands of others.  And then those same leaders are leading the march to collect signatures all week long, not just on the weekend.  They are leading the push to fund this fast-paced campaign.

Obviously, it is premature to celebrate.  In fact there is much work to be done, signatures to be collected and funds to be raised.  Do not slow down.  If anything, double your efforts. Collect a few more signatures and commit to donating to cover the costs of this effort.

But, also reach around and pat yourself on the back or thank your church leaders for "taking the law into their own hands" and working to qualify this referendum.

Governor Jerry Brown just signed into law AB 1266 which would allow boys and girls to share the same school locker rooms, showers, restrooms, sporting programs, and school activities, based on the student’s gender identity, rather than his or her actual biological gender.

Gender identity refers to a person’s subjective opinion of ones gender, which may or may not correspond to the person’s biological sex. But no matter the student’s gender identity, imposing this drastic and intrusive law upon all students is foolish and irresponsible.

This bill will go into effect in Jan. 2014 unless we stop it.

Sign up to join the fight as we get ready to circulate petitions to stop this ridiculous new law.

Referendum Filed to Overturn Co-Ed Bathroom Bill AB 1266

(Sacramento, CA)  Calling for respect of all students, a referendum was filed today to overturn AB 1266, recently signed into law by Governor Brown.  The controversial legislation has come to be called "the co-ed bathroom bill" because of its provision that allows children in grades K-12 to choose whatever bathroom or locker room they feel matches their sexual identity.

"We respect that some students are struggling with their own sexual identity, but we ask for respect for the other students who will be humiliated when a boy walks into the girl`s locker room," said Karen England, Executive Director of Capitol Resource Institute.  "This is a privacy issue, a safety issue, and a common sense issue."

California law allows the public to vote out objectionable measures passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor, but the proponents of a referendum are required to gather more than 500,000 signatures within 90 days from the signature of the Governor.

"It seems unbelievable that this bill would ever have made its way through the Legislature and signed into law by the Governor.  Many people have contacted our office asking if this is a mistake or a joke," said England.  "Others have said that they will be taking their students out of public schools, some even saying they are planning to move out of State."

The new law is the first of its kind in the country and it is unclear how school districts will withstand likely legal challenges.

Referendum proponents are building a web site for the effort www.privacyforallstudents.com.

Assemblyman Curt Hagman Hand-Delivers Thousands of AB 1266 Opposition Letters to Governor

(SACRAMENTO) Assemblyman Curt Hagman (Chino Hills-R) delivered multiple bags to Governor Jerry Brown’s Office containing 3,646 handwritten, non-form letters urging the Governor’s veto of Assembly Bill 1266. The letters came from congregants at Calvary Chapel in Chino Hills and were gathered in just one day.

“I hope that Governor Brown recognizes the loud voice of the opposition represented in these letters, which not only indicate the disapproval of my constituents, but the disapproval of many citizens in California to this bill,” said Assemblyman Hagman. “This ‘one size fits all’ approach to something like gender disregards the privacy of our children and the diversity and local authority of school districts in California.”

AB 1266 by Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (San Francisco-D) would require that a pupil be permitted to participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athletic teams and competitions, and use facilities such as showers and bathrooms consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupil’s records.
