Petition: Urge the Pentagon to scrub plan to court-martial Christians

(FRC) The very troops who defend our religious freedom are at risk of having their own taken away.

Last week, anti-Christian and left-wing activists met at the Pentagon with military officials to discuss pressing issues in the military. What issues would be of such importance to gain such a high-level hearing?

According to these far-left consultants, religion is one of the chief problems plaguing our troops. As the Washington Post reported, some are saying that "religious proselytizing" is at the top of the list of problems in the armed forces -- even on par with sexual assault.

As a result of such complaints from the left, the Air Force has -- according to the Post --published, but not yet distributed a new document with the directive that leaders of all levels (including chaplains) may not "promote their personal religious beliefs to their subordinates or to extend preferential treatment for any religion." The penalty these secularists are seeking for those who don`t comply with their view of religious speech is court-martial.

If this policy goes forward, Christians within the military who speak of their faith could now be prosecuted as enemies of the state. This has the potential to destroy military recruiting across the services as Americans realize that their faith will be suppressed by joining the military.

Our brave troops deserve better. If chaplains and other personnel are censored from offering the full solace of the Gospel, there is no religious freedom in the military.

Please join me in signing the petition to Secretary Hagel urging him to protect the religious freedom of our troops - and not to proceed with the purge of religion within the ranks called for by anti-Christian activists.

Boy Scouts--Betrayal in the Boardroom

(Capitol Resource Institute) The leadership of the Boy Scouts of America appears ready to cower to the bullying of homosexual activists.  In a dramatic about face from previous rules, the BSA Executive Committee announced today that it is proposing to abandon its policy on disallowing homosexual members into its ranks.

This is the very same policy that the organization vigorously defended [insert link] and protected all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States just over 10 years ago.  What has happened in the leadership ranks of the BSA over the last decade to cause them to cave in the defense of the hard fought right to Freedom of Association? According to Karen England, Executive Director of Capitol Resource Institute, "What the homosexual lobby did not accomplish in the highest court of the United States is now being accomplished in the boardroom.  A nonstop barrage of accusations and name calling seems to be working against a once brave institution."

Financial considerations may also play a part in the proposed abandoning of principal.  "The Boy Scouts take in $500 million per year and that makes them very vulnerable.  Right here in California, legislators are pushing to financially cripple the Scouts by removing their tax exemption unless the Scouts change their admission and leadership policies," according to England.

The BSA reports that pressure for such a turnaround in policy is coming not only from the BSA boardroom but also the boardrooms of some of the Fortune 500 Companies that fund the Scouts.  "In a sense the Scouts are now collateral damage of battles lost long ago in the amoral and politically correct board rooms of our nation`s largest companies," said England.

"I want to send a clear message that those currently in leadership of the Scouts:  Those that are proposing this policy change do not speak for all current Scouts, former Scouts, and others who stood beside the Scouts in defending their policies all the way to the Supreme Court.  You are betraying many individuals and you are betraying the legacy of an iconic institution," said England.

Ironically, the Boy Scouts appear to be giving into pressures that the homosexual community often claims to be fighting:  bullying, stigmatizing and exclusion.  "The BSA leadership is allowing itself to be bullied into communicating that it is something it is not. The Scouts are not being asked to tolerate; they are being asked to advocate.  They are being asked to become something different. If they do so, they will lose members and ultimately the funds they are trying to protect," according to England.

Capitol Resource Institute will vigorously oppose the Boy Scouts of America proposed resolution to allow homosexuals into the ranks of membership and/or leadership. The resolution will be voted on at a board meeting in May.     We encourage all of you to contact your local BSA organizations and oppose the resolution.

FCC set to drop ban on f-word and nudity

(One Million Moms) The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced it is considering dropping current broadcast decency standards that ban explicit profanity and "non-sexual" nudity.

You can read the press release from the FCC here.

Specifically, if enacted, the new FCC policy would allow network television and local radio stations to air the f-word, the s-word and to allow programs to show frontal female nudity, even during hours when they know children will be watching and listening.

It is accepting comments on the proposal from the viewing public until the end of April.

Current broadcast decency law prohibits expletives and nudity, even if brief or "fleeting." The Supreme Court has upheld the law as constitutionally enforceable by the FCC, despite lawsuit attempts by networks NBC and FOX to overturn it.

TAKE ACTION

Submit your comments to the FCC, urging it to reject any changes to the current policy.

The FCC will not accept general email comments. To be valid, you are required to file a formal comment via the FCC`s website.

Please follow these instruction carefully, to insure your comment is accepted by the FCC:

1. Go to http://apps.fcc.gov/ecfs/upload/begin?procName=&filedFrom=X.
2. Enter the code "13-86" in the "Proceeding Number" box and fill out the few remaining required fields.
3. Enter your comment in the text box provided and click "Continue."
4. From there, review your comment and click "Confirm."

Here is a sample comment you may submit:

I oppose any changes to the current FCC indecency standards that would allow television and radio stations to broadcast expletives and nudity on the public airwaves, even if brief or "fleeting."

The Supreme Court has confirmed the FCC`s authority to enforce policies regarding expletives and nudity, especially during times when children are likely to be watching or listening.

Relaxing the current policy would not serve the public interest and I urge the FCC to reject all proposals that would allow for the broadcast of expletives and nudity on FCC-licensed stations.

Separate but Unequal

(Capitol Resource Institute) California`s SB 323 came one step closer to becoming the law of the Golden State as the bill easily passed out of the California Senate Governance and Finance Committee.  Should SB 323 become law it would break new ground in using the tax system to punish those who are disliked by the LGBT activists.

SB 323 would remove certain State tax exemptions for public charity youth organizations that discriminate on the basis of gender identity, race, sexual orientation, nationality, religion or religious affiliation.  But in today`s committee hearing the proponents clamed that the bill would not affect those youth programs organized under the structure of a religious body.  The Boy Scouts meeting at the local Presbyterian Church need not comply with the law, but the Scout troop meeting next door at the community center could lose its tax exemption if it restricts who can be troop leader.  This oddity has led to the description of the proposed law as proudly promoting State treatment that is "separate but unequal".

That disparity should raise a few eyebrows and demand further explanation.  Apparently we are to conclude that a club that determines that a homosexual man should not be its leader is deemed so heinous that the organization should be punished into conformity by taxation.  But if the youth group meets in a church, never mind.  In allowing such an exception, the proponents implicitly admit that the State should show tolerance for different membership and leadership policies.

While the target of this bill is the Boy Scouts (the Committee`s official analysis says, "it is clearly aimed at them") its effects are much wider than that.  This is good only because it means there will be other organizations expressing their opposition.  While one uniformed Scout leader at the Committee hearing did his organization proud, another former Scout would not have earned a merit badge for his performance.  He alluded to pressure for greater diversity in the Scouts and signaled that given time the Scout policies evolve and would change.  The discussion of discrimination presumably would soon be moot.

SB 323 requires that youth sports leagues allow children of any gender to participate on any team.  But the State intends to reach beyond the playing field and into locker rooms, showers and bathrooms also.  This bill`s prohibition on gender identity based discrimination means that a boy claiming gender confusion is permitted to share those facilities with girls.  Any attempt at segregation risks a fine in the form of taxes.

Proponents of the new law seem genuinely angry that California`s various pronouncements about sexuality are not being observed by certain youth organizations.  They have declared certain things to be discrimination and that should be the end of the issue.  But of course the law and public opinion, for now, say otherwise.

In a landmark case dealing with the Boy Scouts in 2000, the United States Supreme Court determined that the First Amendment right of "expressive association" trumped the laws of a state dealing with this same type of discrimination.  The Boy Scouts were allowed to deny an openly homosexual man a leadership position in a local Scout troop even though the laws of the State declared such a denial to be impermissible discrimination.

The public seems to agree.  If a mother says she wants to choose the role models for her 12 year-old when sending him to a voluntary club, most of us do not equate her with the racist bent on bringing back segregation.  We get it that tolerance is a two way street.  And we are a little unnerved by the idea that those who currently hold political power in our State are attempting to use that power to bankrupt any organization that does not agree with them.

It is ironic that so many of those who are demanding that individuals be able to marry the one they choose would at the same time deny the right of the individual to simply choose his Scout leader.
