May 3rd: National Day of Prayer

(National Day of Prayer) The 61st annual National Day of Prayer will take place Thursday, May 3, 2012. Millions will unite in prayer at thousands of events from coast to coast.

This year’s theme, One Nation Under God, is based on Psalm 33:12: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”

Dr. David Jeremiah has joined Mrs. Shirley Dobson to help lead the nation in prayer as the Honorary Chairman.

Dr. David Jeremiah – NDP Honorary Chairman

Heavenly Father,

Every good gift and perfect gift comes from You. You are a faithful God and Your mercy endures forever.

You have promised to bless the nation that trusts in You.  Our currency proclaims “In God We Trust,” but in our culture we are far from You.

In the words of the prophet Daniel, “We have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments.”

We come before You once more, seeking Your forgiveness and mercy.  You, O God, are our only hope… Hear our prayer and, for Your honor’s sake, shine Your face upon this nation.

Give our leaders the desire to seek Your wisdom and the courage to follow Your guidance… and watch over the men and women of our armed forces as they sacrifice for the cause of freedom.

We give You thanks for all You have done for us, and we earnestly pray that You will help us become, once again, a nation whose God is the Lord.

In the name of Your Son, and our Savior, we pray this prayer.

Bill Introduced to Repeal the Johnson Amendment

(Alliance Defense Fund) A bill was recently introduced in the House of Representatives to repeal the portion of the Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3) popularly referred to as the Johnson Amendment.  The bill is H.R. 3600 and, in its preamble, states that its purpose is to “restore the Free Speech and First Amendment rights of churches and exempt organizations by repealing the 1954 Johnson Amendment.”

It is no secret that ADF believes the Johnson Amendment is blatantly unconstitutional.  It violates the First Amendment in numerous ways.  It was also passed hastily with no forethought given to its effect on the constitutional rights of churches and pastors.  If you are interested, one scholar has done an in-depth study of the history of the Johnson Amendment and its dubious beginnings. This scholar concluded that the Johnson Amendment had nothing to do with the so-called “separation of church and state” and was not intended to enforce any perceived proper role of the church in relation to politics.  Rather, the Johnson Amendment was a bill passed to silence Johnson’s political opponents who were hurting his reelection chances.

Dig Deeper: New Teen You-Tube Trend Is Pretty Ugly

(CitizenLink) “This is one of the most horrible, tragic and damaging things I’ve ever seen,” I thought, as I forced myself to watch a home-made “Am-I-Pretty-or-Ugly?” You-Tube-you-vote video. Parents, beware. This has become the latest rage.

Striking a full-body pose (clothed, thankfully) – live on camera – I watched as a relatively friendly, but insecure, 13-year-old girl verbally degraded her own body, her image and her intelligence for the entire You-Tube world to see, hear … and vote online – “Am I pretty or ugly?”

Last I checked, tens of thousands of teens had cast their votes – and some included very rude or sexual comments, many with profanity.

Indoctrination: The Movie

(MovieGuide) INDOCTRINATION is a very powerful documentary that should be seen by every Christian.

It follows a homeschool family as they try to answer the question whether it’s better to homeschool or go to public school. Interviews with Christian teachers, principals, and students demonstrate how toxic the environment is in the public schools. Documentary footage of elementary school students being taught homosexuality is frightening.

The legal council for the National Education Association says it’s not about teaching the children, it’s about power. Of course, almost every local teachers union in the United States is affiliated with the National Education Association, so every local teachers union has been corrupted in one way or another by its radical leftist, humanist and Anti-Christian worldview. Because of the power of the radical teachers unions, many states now require all teachers to indoctrinate student with Anti-Christian, leftist ideology promoting all kinds of sexual perversion and immorality.

‘Angry Queers’: Christians are ‘scum,’ deserve ‘hammers through their windows’

(LifeSiteNews) The group that allegedly smashed up a Portland church hopes its “small act of vengeance will strike fear into the hearts of” Christian leaders who teach traditional sexual morality, according to an e-mail message the group released to the public.

A group calling itself “Angry Queers” has claimed responsibility for throwing baseball-sized rocks through nine church windows in Portland’s Mars Hill Church, including two 100-year-old stained glass panes.

“Churches are a major contributor to the culture that deems trans women of color to be disposable, as not worth keeping alive,” the statement read.

The “brand of Christianity” taught by Mark Driscoll, pastor of the largest Mars Hill Church in Seattle, “crusades against the ‘feminization’ of Jesus,” the e-mail stated. “We angry queers are not fans of Jesus, but we have a problem with anyone who has a problem with femmes.”

Joint Legal Statement to Repeal SB 48

(National Center for Law and Policy) We have previously written here regarding how California`s SB 48, which was signed last summer by Governor Jerry Brown and went into effect on January 1, 2012, is a dark legislative stain on the cultural landscape of California.  SB 48 threatens to fundamentally undermine parental authority and damage religious freedom by coercively indoctrinating our most precious and valuable resource, our children, to not only tolerate but to embrace GLBT "values"--starting as young as five years old.    We are now urging you to join us today and act in the cause of freedom by supporting the CLASS Act effort to repeal SB 48.  NCLP attorneys have, along with the Advocates for Faith & Freedom, the Pacific Justice Institute, and the Alliance Defense Fund, created a joint legal statement encouraging pastors and churches to join this critical effort to protect and defend the next generation.  This joint statement is similar to a document we created together back in 2008 for the Proposition 8 effort.  To see the joint legal statement, click here

As we previously reported, SB 48 mandates that all social science classes in public schools, from kindergarten through twelfth grade, shall include "the role and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans," prohibits any school activities or curriculum that "promote a discriminatory bias" against these behaviors, and mandates that textbooks or instruction material may not "reflect adversely" on persons based on their sexual orientation.  Unless stopped, the horrible legacy of SB 48 will be thirteen years of taxpayer funded (translation "supported by me and you") GLBT indoctrination of our kids, folks!  Unlike sexual education instruction in California, SB 48 contains no opt-out provision, so parents with religious or moral objections will not have the opportunity to exclude their children from the promotion of the radical GLBT agenda in the classroom.  SB 48 promises to further marginalize and silence the biblical viewpoint of human sexuality in public education while coercively normalizing the GBLT viewpoint.  SB 48 will force Christian public school administrators and teachers with deeply held religious beliefs to violate their conscience, quit their job, or be fired.

Our already struggling public schools should focus on improving themselves as academic institutions, rather than increasingly becoming a place for polarizing politicians to experiment with radical secular "progressive" utopian social engineering, coercively forcing by legal mandate their corrupt agenda on our impressionable young children. SB 48 diverts precious classroom time and resources away from science, math, reading, and writing to promote the political propaganda of a few. SB 48 promises to brainwash public education`s captive audience by bringing to bear all social science curriculums, including history books and other instructional materials, to teach children as young as five to applaud transgenderism, bisexuality, and homosexuality.  We believe that SB 48 is a breach of the public trust that tyrannically tramples the fundamental right of religious conscience.

The CLASS Act repeals SB 48 by advocating an accurate teaching of history. It ensures that historical figures covered in social science curriculum are only included for their contributions to society, not their sexual conduct of choice. Time is of the essence.  Voters only have until the first week of July 2012 to gather the signatures required to get the CLASS Act on the 2014 ballot.  Please visit www.StopSb48.com for more information and to download petitions.  Thank in advance for being willing to act in the cause of freedom.  Your children and grandchildren will thank you.

California shouldn`t brainwash students

(L.A. Times) California is one of the globe`s most complex and diverse societies. And it`s fair to expect that as schools teach history, it should include that complexity and diversity.

It`s simply a matter of accuracy, just as we would expect accuracy in instruction about mathematics, science or any other academic subject.

It would be outrageous for the Legislature to dictate how schools teach math or science, substituting politics-tinged judgment for that of professional educators and subject experts.

It`s equally outrageous for the Legislature to dictate, in great specificity, how schools present California history – not only decreeing what events should be stressed but also how they are portrayed.

Brainwashing children with politically correct versions of history is something that occurs in oppressive dictatorships.

What Is The Church`s Responsibility To The State?

(Alliance Defense Fund) Last fall, Eric Metaxas` newest book, Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Prophet, Martyr, Spy, became a New York Times No. 1 bestseller. In the book, Metaxas explores what happened when the German theologian`s profound faith convictions ran up against a Nazi regime determined to co-opt, corrupt, and then neutralize the voice of the church in Germany.

Why is the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer of particular significance for Christians today?

There are a number of parallels that, in reading about him and about that time, you immediately recognize. It`s astounding. The fact, for instance, that people tend not to be prepared for what`s coming. If the church is really being the church, they will see what is going on in the culture around them. But if they are sort of playing at being the church – just going through the motions – they`ll be blindsided. That`s precisely what happened in Bonhoeffer`s generation.

The Germans had gotten a few things slightly wrong, but it didn`t seem like a big deal until the "perfect storm" of the Third Reich came and challenged them – and they weren`t prepared. Many in the church didn`t see the problem. But Bonhoeffer did – he saw that for the church to be the church, the church cannot be dictated to by the state. His prophetic voice went unheeded in the 30s, but today his voice and what he had to say may be the thing that saves us. I hope it is.

What would Bonhoeffer consider the correct relationship between the church and the state?

Bonhoeffer saw that the state was trying to encroach on the boundaries of the church. He was able to say, "Wait a second, we`ve got to assert ourselves. We`ve got to be the church."

You always speak the truth in love ...

If the church is being the church, [it] will naturally be sensitive to those encroachments and will understand that we have to be bold to exist. But it`s very easy for the church not to be the church … or to be the church in name only. [Because], by being the church, you automatically bump up against the world and the state – and you have to push back. To know how to push back, as a Christian … it`s a complicated thing.

When, for Bonhoeffer, does `a government to be wary of` become `a government to oppose`?

[Bonhoeffer] says that the church has three functions. First, to challenge the government to be the government. In other words, to fulfill God`s idea of "What is the state?" Second, when the state is going wrong, abusing its power, [the church must] stand against it … in a helpful way. We must exhibit tough love. "We are here to help you be a good state. But when it goes wrong, we are going to point that out."

Third, if the state is not behaving appropriately – if it is oppressing a certain group, for instance – then, the church must stand up and say, "We`re going to help those victims." Even if "those victims" are not Christians or members of the church, it is our job to help them. Bonhoeffer says that`s what agape love is: to love those who are unlovable … who are different. To stand up for them.

Then, finally, Bonhoeffer said if the state is victimizing people [like the Jews of his era], it`s not good enough for us to just bandage up the wounds of the victims. The church must actually try to stop the state from perpetrating whatever evil it is perpetrating. Bonhoeffer felt that to be a Christian during the Third Reich, in the end, was to directly oppose the state – not to oppose the nation of Germany but this false state, this tyranny, which really was anti-Germany. That`s a very dramatic difference from where we are in a culture today. But it`s instructive.

Today, many pastors insist politics has no place in the pulpit. What would Bonhoeffer say? There`s no question that there is a temptation to make an idol of politics. At the same time, there`s a temptation on the opposite side to make an idol of a kind of personal piety that does not engage with the world. Both are counterfeits for God.

To avoid politics entirely is to say to the unborn, to the slave, to anybody who is a victim, "You know what? We really don`t care about you that much. We care about our own personal piety, and God is in charge of you." As if God is requiring nothing of me.

The Christian faith is an active faith. It`s completely different from this sort of "playing defense," religiosity kind of thing. If you`re fear-based, you`re not worshiping Jesus. We need the church of Jesus to be the church of Jesus, Bonhoeffer said. If the church will be the church, the gates of hell will not prevail against it. But if we`re just playing at religion … then we fail.

Susan G. Komen grants flow to Planned Parenthood in 2012

(American Family Association) Earlier this year the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure announced they would no longer contribute to Planned Parenthood, the nation`s largest abortion provider, after it was revealed that Planned Parenthood was the subject of a government inquiry.

But after caving to intense pressure from abortion activists, Komen reversed their decision and now plans to financially support at least 17 Planned Parenthood affiliates in 2012, according to the Christian Post.

This means everyday people like you and me, who go all out to raise money for breast cancer research in honor of a loved one, should know that if it is done on behalf of Komen, that money may very well end up funding a Planned Parenthood facility that provides abortions.

Pastor Wants Christians to `Take Back the Rainbow` and Restore Biblical Symbol

(Christian Post) A Washington pastor fed up with the "hijacking" of the symbol of God`s covenant of peace created after what the Bible calls the great flood, wants to rouse Christians from their apathetic slumber and "take back the rainbow" from those using the symbol to push against biblical standards, especially the institution of marriage.

In a move to reclaim the symbol from the homosexual community, Dr. Hutcherson told CP that members of Antioch Bible Church have made and started wearing rainbow pins, "as conversation starters" to spread their message.

"The rainbow is a symbol, but its meaning points to the very character of God. So Christians…use this God-given symbol for His glory. Using it won`t make you a homosexual. It won`t make you a New Ager. It won`t make Leprechauns real. But it might allow you to get into conversations with people who need to meet the very One who gave us His promise in the first place," the web post reads.

Paganism and Witchcraft Placed Alongside Christian Studies in UK Schools

(Christian Post) A U.K. school system has included the study of witchcraft and druidry on its official religious education syllabus for the first time, meaning pagan practices will be taught alongside contemporary religions, such as Christianity, Islam and Judaism.

While Christianity will remain the dominant focus at Cornwall Council schools, students will now also learn about the ancient druid beliefs of the British Isles that thrived before Christianity, aspects of witchcraft, and the worship of gods from various regions, the Daily Mail reported.

The syllabus, put forth by Cornwall`s advisory group, makes it clear that students ages 5 and above will learn mostly about Christianity, but 40 percent of the other religious material will be devoted to non-Christian and pagan beliefs.

PTA chapter in NY addresses needs of gay students

Gay `marriage` consequences

(Baptist Press) The cultural impact, Mohler said, will force pastors to address their position on marriage, and obligate churches to declare they don`t believe certain couples are married -- when the government says they are. Parents, Mohler added, will need to train children on the biblical definition and role of marriage, in the face of what the culture is telling the children. Christian institutions also will need to address their legal rights, which may be curtailed.

"We will have to learn how to demonstrate Christian love, while also demonstrating Christian conviction," Mohler said.

Christians, he added, must "examine where we`ve fallen short of biblical fidelity on marriage. Where we have, we have lessened our credibility to speak on the issue."

New health-care mandate: Send parents to doctor

(WND) There’s a potential new health-care mandate developing in the state of California, where lawmakers want to crack down on parents who have concerns over the state-required vaccine injections for their children.

Unrelated to Obamacare, but instead coming from a state health-care push, the proposal, AB 2109 by Assemblyman Richard Pan, D-Sacramento, “seeks to rein in parents who object to mandatory vaccines for students,” according to officials with the Pacific Justice Institute.

The legal team said the present law allows parents to opt their children out of mandatory shots by sending a letter to the school and stating their beliefs that provide a foundation for their objections.

“Assemblyman Pan’s bill would require the creation of a new government form for those parents to complete, and would also require them to get a signature and information from a doctor, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant about vaccines and communicable diseases,” the organization reported.

“The latter mandate would likely require parents to spend time and money in a doctor’s office when they are not sick, just to get information they could have accessed online.”

A health committee is scheduled to begin discussion of the proposal next week.

PJI said its attorneys have advised many parents over the years who, for a wide variety of religious and philosophical reasons, do not want their children injected with one or more of the mandatory vaccines.

“AB 2109 reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of both parents and the role of public health,” said PJI staff attorney Matthew McReynolds.

“The parents who have concerns about vaccines are not dumb, and they should not be forced to pay for state-mandated information they could easily get elsewhere, at little or no cost. This is a classic big-government solution in search of a problem,” he said.

“When government starts issuing healthcare mandates, watch your wallet,” warned Brad Dacus, president of the institute. “This special-interest legislation creates a windfall for Big Healthcare at the expense of conscientious parents.”

He said the trend of legislation that “pads the profits of pharmaceutical and healthcare giants at the expense of parents and taxpayers” is beginning to alarm.

Last year, PJI opposed legislation that now allows drug companies to give minors controversial injections like the HPV vaccine without telling their parents.

Once they convince kids they need the shots, HPV vaccine makers can then bill taxpayers through a federal program, officials said.

(The Telegraph) Lord Carey says worshippers are being “vilified” by the state, treated as “bigots” and sacked simply for expressing their beliefs.

The attack is part of a direct appeal to the European Court of Human Rights before a landmark case on religious freedom.

In a written submission seen by The Daily Telegraph, the former leader of more than 70 million Anglicans warns that the outward expression of traditional conservative Christian values has effectively been “banned” in Britain under a new “secular conformity of belief and conduct”.

Schools left to figure out gay studies mandate

(My Desert) A landmark law requiring California schools to include contributions of gays and lesbians and people with disabilities in school curriculum technically went into effect in January.

But public schools have received little direction on the new law, leaving it up to individual schools and teachers to interpret how to teach it.

“Right now, it`s very loose and up in the air,” said Demitrious Sinor, who teaches history at Desert Hot Springs High School.

“(There`s) no mandate of what to teach, how to teach, when to teach it.”

Justice Scalia defends view of the Constitution

(Daily Trojan) U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia discussed his philosophy of Constitutional originalism and how it can be applied to modern cases at the Gould School of Law’s 2012 Justice Lester W. Roth Lecture on Tuesday.

Scalia explained originalism as interpreting the Constitution as the framers intended it, instead of reading new meaning into the document.

His ideological opponents believe the Constitution is a living document that changes over time to reflect an evolving society.

“The living Constitution — I hate it,” Scalia said. “The enduring Constitution, that is what I’m defending.”

The Day of Silencing

(OneNewsNow) On April 20, in thousands of schools across America, your hard-earned tax dollars will help underwrite the homosexual indoctrination of your kids. New Bill Could Mandate Doctor Visits for Parents Who Oppose Vaccines

(Pacific Justice Institute) A recently introduced bill in the California Assembly is raising new concerns about government-imposed healthcare mandates, this time on the state level.

AB 2109 by Assemblyman Richard Pan (D-Sacramento), seeks to rein in parents who object to mandatory vaccines for students. Current law allows parents to opt out by sending a letter to the school, expressing the beliefs that prompted their decision. Assemblyman Pan`s bill would require the creation of a new government form for those parents to complete, and would also require them to get a signature and information from a doctor, nurse practitioner or physician`s assistant about vaccines and communicable diseases. The latter mandate would likely require parents to spend time and money in a doctor`s office when they are not sick, just to get information they could have accessed online. The bill is scheduled to be heard in the Assembly Health Committee this coming Tuesday, April 17.

Pacific Justice Institute has advised many parents over the years who, for a wide variety of religious and philosophical reasons, do not want their children injected with one or more of the mandatory vaccines. PJI Staff Attorney Matthew McReynolds sent a letter to the Assembly Health Committee yesterday opposing the bill.  "AB 2109 reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of both parents and the role of public health," McReynolds said. "The parents who have concerns about vaccines are not dumb, and they should not be forced to pay for state-mandated information they could easily get elsewhere, at little or no cost. This is a classic big-government solution in search of a problem."

Brad Dacus, president of PJI, commented, "When government starts issuing healthcare mandates, watch your wallet. This special-interest legislation creates a windfall for Big Healthcare at the expense of conscientious parents." Dacus noted a disturbing trend toward legislation that pads the profits of pharmaceutical and healthcare giants at the expense of parents and taxpayers. Last year, PJI opposed legislation that now allows drug companies to give minors controversial injections like the HPV vaccine without telling their parents. Once they convince kids they need the shots, HPV vaccine makers can then bill taxpayers through a federal program.

Planned Parenthood launches ‘40 Days of Prayer’ for abortion

(LifeSiteNews) Although Planned Parenthood has frequently complained of pro-life prayer vigils - particularly the biannual 40 Days for Life Campaign - one California Planned Parenthood affiliate seems to have chosen an unusually direct way of countering such efforts.

Last month, Six Rivers Planned Parenthood (SRPP) of Eureka, California, launched a campaign called the 40 Days of Prayer: Supporting Women Everywhere. The campaign, as noticed by Liberty Counsel, lists 40 different prayers for those involved in the “sacred care” of abortions to continue protecting, providing, and embracing the procedure - including mothers, escorts, abortionists, and everyone involved except the unborn children.

School covers mural for depicting a man, woman & child

(WPRO) Warwick School Superintendent Peter Horoschak is stepping in after a student mural at Pilgrim High School was deemed inappropriate and painted over because it depicted a man holding the hand of a woman and child.

The mural was meant to depict the life of a man and it ended with the scene with the man, woman and a child. The student artist, 17-year-old Liz Bierendy, said that she depicted the man and woman has married with wedding rings. According to Horoshack’s press release the scene was painted over because “some of the members of the Pilgrim High Schoolcommunity suggested that the depiction of a young man’s development from boyhood through adulthood as displayed may not represent the life experiences of many of the students at Pilgrim High School.”

Penrod keeping old hymns alive

(OneNewsNow) A 14-year veteran of the Gaither Vocal Band has released his second solo album called Hymns.

Guy Penrod`s debut solo CD, Breathe Deep, won success in mainstream Christian and country music arenas (see earlier article). The next step for Penrod was to record a CD of old hymns -- but he says it was a perfectly natural thing for him to do.
Penrod believes that hymns are not a departure from his type of music but a continuation of the thought process for a Christian singer.

"I don`t want [hymns] to get lost, so I wanted to do my little part to raise those hymns that have been to the spotlight again -- and hopefully kids the age of my kids and folks maybe who have come to Christ prior to being in a church setting where hymns were done, will be exposed to some great music that needs to live on," says the singer.

Schools Can Talk About Easter Biblically, Legally

(Christian Post) A Christian-based legal defense alliance wants to make sure everyone understands that schools in the U.S. may talk about Easter in the historical sense of what is written in the Bible about the time of Jesus` crucifixion and resurrection – not just about chocolate Easter bunnies.

The Alliance Defense Fund published a memorandum last week which states that courts have long held that it is permissible to objectively discuss the different holidays (including Easter) that are celebrated and what their meaning is to those who celebrate them.

Poor mental health among homosexuals caused by “lifestyle itself” or “discrimination”?

(LifeSiteNews) A study of the mental health of homosexual Australians, called the Private Lives 2 survey, purports to show that the much higher rate of psychiatric treatment sought by homosexuals, compared to heterosexuals, is due to discrimination and lack of societal “acceptance.” At the same time, other studies have come to repeated conclusions indicating that “the male homosexual lifestyle itself” is a primary cause of these mental health issues.

Calif. pastors still facing charges

(OneNewsNow) One California attorney says a judge`s refusal to dismiss a case against Christians arrested for reading the Bible should serve as a "wake-up call" for believers (see earlier story).

A Riverside trial court judge has refused to dismiss a case involving Pastor Brett Coronado and Mark Mackey of Calvary Chapel Hemet, who were arrested February 2, 2011, on misdemeanor charges. The incident occurred in front of the Department of Motor Vehicles in Hemet, where Mackey read aloud to a group standing outside waiting for the office to open. A security officer told Mackey to stop, and when Mackey refused, a police officer was called to the scene. He arrested the pair.

Researchers Examine Textbook Treatment of Islam

(Citizen Link) A recently released analysis of history textbooks used in school districts nationwide reveals a strong pro-Islam bias that researchers say will profoundly affect the way future generations approach foreign policy, if left uncorrected.

“Education or Indoctrination? The Treatment of Islam in 6th through 12th Grade American Textbooks,” by the 10-year-old nonprofit organization ACT! For America Education, was sent to 70,000 school board members across the country in late March. The heavily documented, 229-page study, conducted over the course of two years, found the textbooks gloss over some aspects of the Islamic faith while completely rewriting others, said Executive Director Guy Rodgers.

New Study Shows Abstinence Education Effective

(LifeNews) Research published this week revealed more evidence that a Sexual Risk Avoidance (SRA) abstinence program is effective in delaying sexual onset. Four major conclusions are drawn from the article, entitled, Impact of the Choosing the Best Program in Communities Committed to Abstinence Education.

  1. Students in an SRA class were more likely to delay the onset of sexual activity from pre to posttest than their peers.
  2. The findings of this study are more realistic and relevant than the Jemmott study on abstinence, as well as most “comprehensive” sex ed. research since the study occurred in schools.
  3. The study was conducted with schools and communities that supported the SRA abstinence message for their students
  4. SRA messages must be reinforced throughout the teen years in order to sustain effect.
